SUMMARY:DR. BILL ROBBINS - Failures and Lessons in 50 years of Prosthodontics
DESCRIPTION:“A 50 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE – MY FAILURES AND LESSONS LEARNED”\n\n\n\n\nJ. William Robbins\, D.D.S.\, M.A.\, maintains a full-time private practice and is Clinical Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Dental School in 1973. He completed a rotating internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth\, Kansas\, and a 2-year General Practice Residency at the V.A. Hospital in San Diego\, California. Dr. Robbins has published over 80 articles\, abstracts\, and chapters on a wide range of dental subjects and has lectured in the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, South America\, Europe\, Middle East\, China\, and Africa. \n\n\n\n\nHe co-authored a textbook\, Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry– A Contemporary Approach\, which is published by Quintessence and is in its 4th Edition. He recently co-authored a new textbook\, Global Diagnosis – A New Vision of Dental Diagnosis and Treatment Planning\, which is also published by Quintessence. He has won several awards including the Presidential Teaching Award at the University of Texas Health Science Center\, the 2002 Texas Dentist of the Year Award\, the 2003 Honorary Thaddeus V. Weclew Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry\, the 2010 Soul Schluger Award given by the Seattle Study Club\, the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry 2015 President’s Award\, and the 2016 Academy of Operative Dentistry Award of Excellence. He is a Diplomate of the Academy of Operative Dentistry\, the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry\, and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. \n\n\n\nIt has been said: “Success is a poor teacher.” In this presentation Dr. Robbins will show failures of his cases and lessons that he has learned in the past 50 years. Dr. Robbins will discuss several areas with possible solutions to failures that he has experienced. \n\n\n\nThis dynamic\, full-spectrum session will review complex clinical and communication challenges at the intersection of restorative dentistry\, diagnosis\, and interdisciplinary care. \n\n\n\nTopics include evidence-based decision making about whether to save or extract compromised teeth\, contemporary considerations for post-and-core use\, and the ongoing challenges of dentin bonding–especially when restoring subgingival margins in both anterior and posterior regions. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss the often-overlooked clinical clues tied to supracrestal attachment (biologic width)\, treatment options for worn lower incisors\, and the esthetic and functional considerations of implants in the anterior maxilla. Communication takes center stage with strategies for effective case presentation based on personality types\, improved team collaboration\, and critical conversations with orthodontists during pre-bonding planning. \n\n\n\nThe session concludes with diagnostic pitfalls that clinicians face -including a look at Global Diagnosis-and a demonstration of how Digital Smile Design (DSD) can elevate treatment planning and patient engagement.

SUMMARY:DR. STEPHEN CHU - Treatment Planning for Complex Cases Involving Dental Implants and Natural Teeth
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chu received his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1984 and his master’s degree in restorative dentistry and certificate in post-graduate Fixed Prosthodontics from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1986. \n\n\n\n He subsequently obtained his dental technician certification in dental ceramics in 1996 and ASMDT status in 1998 at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). He is the former Director of the Continuing Education in Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry at NYUCD. He is a Former Adjunct Clinical Professor at NYUCD in the departments of \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLearning objectives: \n\n\n\n\nKnow when to save or extract a tooth.\n\n\n\nKnow when to save or remove and ailing implant.\n\n\n\nKnow when it is proper to place implants into immediate sockets both in the esthetic zone and molars.\n\n\n\nUnderstand the proper surgical and restorative integration for ultimate esthetic success.\n\n\n\nKnow when to use the patient’s own tissue or find a restorative solution with pink ceramics.\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis:The treatment planning of complex cases requires the highest level of knowledge and skill of the treating team. It is an orchestration of procedures including proper sequencing and timing that makes the difference. An envisionment of the final case before starting is required to know where the goal of treatment will be directed. This\, in conjunction with the patient’s needs and clinical situation comprise the decision-making process for what is the best treatment for the patient.  Problems facing the team such as\, which teeth to save or extract\, should implants be placed immediately or in a delayed protocol\, should multiple implants be placed in the aesthetic zone\, when and how to include orthodontics if needed for sight development\, should pink ceramic be used or should ridge augmentation be performed\, should the case be splinted or broken up into separate bridges or individual teeth\, how to provisionalize the case throughout treatment\, and when to immediate load cases versus do a serial extraction case? These concerns will be addressed in this interdisciplinary approach to our most challenging cases. \n\n\n\nCE Hours:         7 hours \n\n\n\nSponsor:           The BC Comprehensive Dental Treatment Seminar
